99% Good
Today would have been my father’s 61st birthday.
He was an absolutely fantastic person who went out of his way to help as many people as he could all the time. The legacy that he left for his family was that his funeral was standing room only. I knew my father was a great guy, but seeing all of those people together in one room was just awe inspiring, and it showed all of us that one person could really make a really big difference.
Every day I work towards creating that same legacy for my children (which I don’t have- but we will someday), and every year on his birthday I do very something special in his honor.
This week in the US we reached an all time high record- 1% of our population is in prison. I’ve always known that the majority of people are good decent folks, but I’m kind of surprised by that number- I thought it would have been higher. Maybe it’s because the news is generally full of the bad things that people did, - but I’m really happy to hear that 99% of our population is inherently law abiding (or out on parole).
In keeping with my theme of offsetting the bad in the world- I’ve started a program where every month we will donate 1% of our sales to something purely good. 1% doesn’t sound like much- but it is 1% of our sales- not our profits- so it should turn out to be a pretty healthy number.
My father and my father in law had the same birthday- so this morning I made donations to the National Kidney Foundation and Engineers Without Borders in their honor. The National Kidney Foundation coordinates organ donation activities around the world. When my father passed away we donated his organs, and it’s a nice to know that a little bit of my father is still helping people. Engineers Without Borders funds sustainable engineering projects- like providing clean water in developing countries. My father in law was a civil engineer- and that donation helps continue his legacy.
The donation from this month’s sales will go to Look Good Feel Better- a program that helps cancer patients improve their quality of life by helping them cope with the appearance related consequences of being sick. They’re a fantastic organization that has helped over 500,000 people around the world.
In makeup related news- I’m working on the new collection, and we need some testers. I’m particularly looking for women with oily skin to test a new primer, and women with dark circles for a new concealer. Please contact me through the “contact us” form on the site with your name and address if you’re interested.

Awww, I'm really sorry to hear of your early loss of your father. He sounds like he was an amazing guy! (as also your f-i-l)
I really am surprized too that only 1% of the population is in prison...maybe the other 5% are out on parole. LOL
Back to the importance of your post, I think this is absolutely wonderful that you are giving a little something back in your father (and f-i-l's) honor! My Dad is battling cancer, so you can definitely count me in on purchasing this month! I think this is an awesome cause, even though so far, my Dad has been fortunate to not lose any hair. Thank you!
My grandmother donated her body to medical school and my mother plans on doing the same thing. She has already asked us if we would be "ok" with it and we all agree that if it will help students learn that is a good thing. My dad is also a cancer survivor, so count me in for part of your sales this month.
Thank you all so much for the well wishes- today is a pretty rough one for me and it's nice to have the support of my friends.
I don't normally advertise for other companies- but Christina from Pure Luxe created a special eye shadow color to help her friend who just had a mastectomy- I haven't seen the color in person but from what she describes it sounds wonderful. Here's the link to that page:

Also- the weather here is really bad- we're okay for now, but I know the power is out at the studio- we're in the middle of an ice storm- and there's a flood warning- so who knows how bad it will get. Snow we can handle- but ice storms take down power lines and it can take days to get the power back. We'll be fine- but there is a chance we may have a power outage here too- so if you don't hear from me- that's the reason. I'll try to keep you all updated.
You are very welcome! I can imagine how tough it is on you. Dates don't make it any easier. I think your Dad would be very proud! So, hang in there.
I think it's awesome what Christina of Pure Luxe is doing too. I checked out the color and although it's absolutely beautiful and for a wonderful cause, it contains kaolin (from reading her ingredients list)...unfortunately an ingredient I'm sensitive too. =( I hate having ultra sensitive skin. Arrr! I've been trying to look around and see if there are other products I could use and maybe get that as a gift for someone though, but it doesn't seem like there are a lot of kaolin free products to choose from...but there are lots of beautiful colors w/kaolin. lol That is so very sweet of Christina though! =D I do hope she sells a lot of those.
I hope the weather there tames down. You're in NY right?? I've heard it gets terrible there! Hopefully no ice storm or downed power lines.
Btw Christina already sold 232 jars by now (1 of them is mine :)), I hope they'll be completely sold out soon :).
